Erin Greenfield, co-manager of the Trimark Global Endeavor Fund spoke to financial advisors in Ottawa in November 2015.

The investment philosophy of the whole Trimark team has several primary characteristics:

  • Recognize you are buying a business, not just a stock;
  • Focus on quality of the company and its management;
  • Use a strict discipline when assessing the valuation and price of businesses you are buying;
  • Concentrate your portfolio on a small number of diverse businesses in which you have high conviction – fund owns about 30 companies and the top ten comprise 57% of the fund;
  • Be prepared to hold the shares of the business for a long time – average holding period is 7-10 years;
  • Follow your reasoning, not the benchmark index;

This fund is different from many global funds in that it focuses two thirds on mid-capitalization companies where there are less analysts following the companies and more opportunities to discover value. Such companies are able to grow faster than the very large ones.

This fund has a 98% active share, meaning it looks very different from the usual index benchmark, indicating independent thinking on the part of the managers, and has a 20% direct exposure to emerging markets.

The fund has produced first quartile performance over 3, 5 and 10 year periods.
